How to play Reversi

Take a moment with Reversi before moving to another game. When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Check the rule that explains your first action. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Make the controls familiar

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Black moves first. Highlighted cells show legal placements.
  2. Place a disc to trap one or more opponent discs in a straight line.
  3. Every trapped line from that placement is flipped.
  4. If a player has no legal move, the turn automatically passes.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A useful example

Black–white–empty can become black–black–black when Black plays in the empty square. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Check the stated objective.

Watch out for this

A placement must flip at least one opposing disc; simply placing beside your own discs is not enough. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
