How to play Word Deduction

Read the aim of Word Deduction, then make your first move. Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Guess a five-letter answer from the included collection. Entries must contain five letters; accepted guesses are not checked against a complete dictionary.

Build a steady rhythm

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Step by step

  1. Enter five letters.
  2. Green marks the correct position; gold marks an available copy elsewhere.
  3. Grey means no matching unused copy.
  4. Use the feedback to solve.

Controls

Type a guess and press Check guess or Enter. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Use one clear input at a time.

A useful example

With APPLE as the answer and ALLEE as the guess, the first A and final E are in the right places. The extra L and E are not both counted as present. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

Repeated letters do not imply unlimited copies in the answer. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
