How to play Mahjong Solitaire

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Mahjong Solitaire. Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Look at what changes after your first action. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Match number-marked tiles in a compact layered layout. The starting arrangement has a complete removal route, but your choices can still block later pairs.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Choose a tile with no covering tile and a free left or right side.
  2. Choose a matching free tile.
  3. Uncover lower layers.
  4. Use hints or undo.

Controls

Tap two free matching tiles. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

Equal symbols cannot pair while one is covered. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Check the stated objective.

Watch out for this

Layer and side access matter as well as symbol matching. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
