How to play Chess Tactics Puzzles

Take a moment with Chess Tactics Puzzles before moving to another game. Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Practise with 64 king-and-queen checkmate positions: 48 mate-in-one puzzles and 16 mate-in-two puzzles. This collection focuses on delivering checkmate.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Read the mate objective.
  2. Choose a legal attacking move.
  3. The defender replies automatically where another move is required.
  4. Finish the forced mating line.

Controls

Select pieces and targets; use Hint or New puzzle. Use the control method described here for this activity. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A useful example

A legal check is wrong when it permits escape from the required mate. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Check the stated objective.

Watch out for this

The objective is forced mate, not merely checking the king. Check the rule before repeating the action. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
