How to play Backgammon

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Backgammon. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Look at what changes after your first action. Check the rule that explains your first action. Look at what changes after your first action.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Keep the aim in sight

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Consider the next action carefully.

Watch out for this

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
