How to play Sokoban

Open Sokoban, check the instructions and begin a round. Push every crate onto a target. Use the example below to understand a decision. Begin with the solo mode shown on the page. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Push every crate onto a target. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

Step by step

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Controls

Arrow keys or direction buttons. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A useful example

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Keep the controls nearby.

Watch out for this

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
